The story

Why I built Curious.

In twenty years working in aquariums around the world, there were four things that always frustrated me.

01 · The signs

Out of date as soon as they were printed.

We reprinted signs every few months to account for exhibit changes. Now one edit updates every page and screen instantly.

02 · The talks

Visitors unaware of upcoming talks or feeds.

I lost count of visitors who missed my talks. Now the times are on every page, with an auto-reminder banner.

03 · The detail

Some visitors want the whole story.

Some visitors wanted one fact, others kept me talking for half an hour. Now everyone can learn at their own pace.

04 · The guesswork

No way to know which exhibits were working.

We improved exhibits without knowing what visitors cared about. Now we see what they looked at, what they learned, and what gets ignored.

How it’s run

The software I always wanted to buy.

01

No app.

Visitors use Curious on their own phone with no app or account needed.

Why I hate downloading apps. Constantly being told to download someone’s app is so frustrating, so I decided Curious didn’t need one.

02

No hardware.

Live Labels run on any screen you already own, or any you buy in the future. All they need is an internet connection.

Why Being tied to a supplier’s own screens is a pain. Curious works on the screens you already have, or whatever you decide to buy.

03

Published prices.

A Curious subscription covers the whole site. That means unlimited exhibits and no setup fee.

Why It drives me mad when you have to get in touch with someone just to find out what something costs. My prices are up front, and I keep them affordable.

04

No contract.

Billed monthly in GBP. Cancel any time.

Why Being tied into multi-year contracts is the bane of my life. If Curious isn’t doing the job, you should be able to leave.

05

Easy to use.

If you can fill in a form, you can use Curious.

Why Zoos and aquariums juggle all sorts of complicated systems. I wanted Curious to be simple and easy to use.

06

No call centres.

Get in touch and it’s me who answers.

Why Curious isn’t a faceless company. I’m the one behind it, and when you need something, it’s me you talk to.

The first to take a chance on it.

I started building Curious in 2023, but I’d been thinking about it for years. Sealife Adventure put their faith in it early, and now it runs their whole visitor guide. I think that’s brilliant.
